One of many items found pinned to the Broken Man's wall. Wonder Science Western, an old pulp magazine that focused on legends of the old west. Special emphasis on stories with a flair for the unknown and unexplained. Ironhorse's exploits, real and exaggerated, were a common feature. The publication date is unknown, but assuming that comic book prices follow real-world trends, the earliest it could have been printed is the late 1960s.
The word you are looking for, friends, is "Astronaut."

|history =
Wearing pilot goggles, leather jacket, and a long red scarf, PAGENAME made no pretense for a secret identity. He was testing rocket ship engines in flights over the city. Everyone knew him by his name, Roy Virgil. They also knew he was a bit eccentric, very wealthy, a visionary. His passion for traveling to space gave him the nickname, PAGENAME. That become his calling card.

During the Great Depression, organized crime families in Romeyn Falls dug themselves in, diversifying their operations. In 1936, the Ingels Street mob tried muscling in on Roy's work, demanding protection money, and he refused. They sent round the Convincer, a one-man wrecking crew, to convince him, but Roy took care of him, dropping him off with the police to tell them about his bosses.

Councilman Joseph Greenwald visited Virgil Air Systems afterwards to see if Roy was interested in taking up crime-fighting, if perhaps the city could support him. Joe helped Roy with his business, permits, and such, and in return Roy helped him campaign. Perhaps it was Joe who got Roy into costume, perhaps not, but he started showing up in a stylized astronaut outfit.

As Roy made good on his arrangement with the city, taking down criminals, his reputation grew - there were newsreels, magazines and toys, and they even started making a movie about him.

His development of the Ethero-Drive, which allowed him to slip through folds of empty space, was a big breakthrough for him, allowing him to venture out into the universe, where he fought villains, had adventures, and encountered alien civilizations. Inspired by the technologies he saw out there, when he came back to Earth he'd work on inventions that would do the same thing, or do entirely new things born of new knowledge.

Along the way, he met Xalzana, the one woman he might have left Earth behind for, but though they met numerous times, and something he thought was love developed, there was a fear in her, not of him, but of something she wouldn't say. On the night he intended to propose to her, there was an attack, separating them, and though he searched more than a dozen worlds for her afterwards, he never saw her again.

Around 1942, Roy came across a star system under attack from the Mrevani, a ruthless race bent on conquest. He discovered that when the Mrevani had first been visited by interstellar explorers, they'd killed them and taken their technology, turning their warlike ways out towards the universe at large, attacking everyone they met. They'd got the technology before they were ready to handle it, and Roy feared that if he gave humanity that technology, then they'd end up going down a similar route. Shaken, he withdrew from human society, becoming a recluse; when the American goverment came round, looking to use his inventions in the war, he refused.

The refusal shook people's faith in him. Though he still did his own part for the war effort, at one point getting captured by the enemy and escaping, the American public preferred to forget about him, turning to heroes who were more clear-cut, heroes they could be certain of, and he disappeared from view.

In late spring of 1946, the Mrevani came to Earth, laying waste to Romeyn Falls. The Astro-Naut returned to stop them, a fleet of drone ships with him to defend his home city. Deftly avoiding the Mrevani's attacks, he piloted his ship into their flying base and blew it up, but took serious injuries in the process. He used a teleporter to return to his base in Romeyn Falls, the Gernsback Building, and with Joe's assistance destroyed his remaining work in order to avoid anyone else using them. Once that was done, he used the teleporter once again, but where he went, whether he lived or died, what ultimately became of him, no-one on Earth knows, and his asteroid base has never been found.

The town renamed itself in honor of his bravery, becoming Astro City in 1947. The rocket beacon on Tower was reconfigured, becoming a warning signal, alerting heroes of impending danger.

Virgil Air Systems would eventually rename itself to Virgil Aeronautics, then Virgil Aero, before being absorbed by N. R. Gistics.
* Astro-naut's Orbital Airstrip harbors spacecrafts, special weapons, advanced technical gear, amazing manufacturing tools, and who knows what other equipment for traveling to outer space, distant planets, and perhaps even time itself.

|observations = Roy had a once-in-a-lifetime mind, coming up with inventions far in advance of Earth technology at the time. As Joe put it, Roy made breakthroughs practically by force of will, simply by knowing they were possible. He doesn't seem to have realized he was anything exceptional, assuming anyone could do it if they put their mind to it.

|speculations =
* Joe notes he only knew some of Roy's secrets, perhaps less than a half. Roy was probably the only one who knew everything.
* It's not mentioned why the Mrevani targeted Romeyn Falls - perhaps in retaliation for Roy's earlier fight with them?
|observations = Roy had a once-in-a-lifetime mind, coming up with inventions far in advance of Earth technology at the time. As Joe put it, Roy made breakthroughs practically by force of will, simply by knowing they were possible. He doesn't seem to have realized he was anything exceptional, assuming anyone could do it if they put their mind to it.
|intro = Raitha McCann is an employee--the personal assistant--of the Silver Adept, where she helps take care of the Adept's communications, meeting scheduling and rescheduling, and even occasional duties as a mediator herself.
|history = Raitha has worked for the Silver Adept since she was housed on Vancouver Island, outside Victoria, and she often longs for the "more manageable" nature of the job back then, where she had time for meditation, pottery, and other activities. However, she does admit to herself that Astro City has far more cultural offerings accessible than did their previous base of operations.

Raitha often works in the brownstone's backyard, which is really located in some extraterrestrial space via the building's back door; Raitha often thinks of this space, what Orn has described as "an offshoot of the fields of Allatar," as being in Canada, since she initially stepped into these fields when in Canada.

On one particularly full day at work, Raitha (among performing other tasks) made sure that the Adept was in the Himalayas for a convocation; checked the Annunciations of W to settle a dispute; dealt with delivery in the mail of goblin eggs; routed the Adept through the Black Paths, and then through the Willoways and Strathclyde, in order to find her a path home, as part of an effort to carve out some much-needed preparation time for her employer. This time was gained by Raitha via a bargain with Lord Colquhoun, who had contacted Raitha in search of the Adept's assistance.

Unfortunately, just as Raitha seemed to have the day's duties under control, the unexpected arrival of the Stone Sea Mages--the Nightflying Lord, the Queen of Dust and Decay, and Tumorr--as the Silver Adept forgot to write down their appointment in her planner, forced Raitha to defuse a tense situation where her guests sought the newly born, but impossible to locate, Ar-Mang. Desperately looking for information on the Ar-Mang that might help with the immediate crisis, Raitha opened the previous day's mail, bringing the guests a key-like object (in fact, the Key of Mang), which seemed to be precisely what they needed. As they left, the trio promised to reward the Adept and her crew.

Not long afterward, the Adept returned from her time spent in a null dimension crafting a set of guardian ritual texts for an upcoming collegium ritual. After Raitha reminded her employer about the importance of recording appointment times and dates in her planner, the Stone Sea Mages' reward arrived--a Tranquility Frog intended to assist the Adept with her work. After finding a space for the frog, Raitha and the Adept collaboratively went through the day's remaining email before Raitha left for the evening to attend her art group's gallery show, hopeful that her employer and friend might show up so that they could enjoy some good sushi together.

Later on, she would be instrumental in bringing the Silver Adept and Marta Dobrescu together to sort out the legal interpretations of a mystic agreement between the Adept and Tzammath.
Dr. Aegyptus was a wicked schemer from around the turn of the century. He operated with an ancient Egypt theme.

|history =
Somewhere in his history, Dr. Aegyptus acquired an Egyptian sarcophagus with time travel abilities. He used it to smuggle unwilling Bakerville colored men and women, back in time, to the distant past. There, he would sell them into slavery, then use the money to purchase items of mystic power before the world knew of their true value. Dame Progress put a stop to this scheme, after being led to its hatching point by Mister Cakewalk. In 1928, he stole the Star of Lahkimpur, and attempted to use it to gain power and eternal life. He was stopped by the combined efforts of Jazzbaby, The Cloak of Night, The Blasphemy Boys, and The Five Fists.
|intro =
Their official title under the U.S. government was the Working Group on Unsettling Anomalies, Classification and Containment, but people who knew them knew them as the Blasphemy Boys. In an era of bootleggers and tommy guns, they investigated and vanquished the supernatural.

|history =
The Working Group on Unsettling Anomalies was established by the President at the urging of Seamus Finneran, possibly the world’s foremost expert in the demonic at the time. Finneran felt it was vital that there be an organization to defend against the dark forces he knew slithered in the hidden corners of reality. Unfortunately, he saw extensive research into those forces as key to that defense, and over time that exposure tainted him in ways unnatural and dark.

In 1928, they traveled to Romeyn Falls to investigate a suspicious medium named Destiné. Eventually, they discovered that he was actually Dr. Aegyptus, and defeated him with the help of Jazzbaby, The Cloak of Night, and The Five Fists.

In 1929, the Blasphemy Boys were sent on a last minute mission to Bangor, Maine that ended in tragedy, with at lease one agent, Carruthers, being driven insane. Sent to look into new acquisitions at the Ashton Museum in Baltimore, their investigation had led them into the sewer system, where they were attacked by a horde of Batrachi. The creatures killed Brownie, and Greg “the Big Hunk” Hussarian, under the influence of a force from beyond our reality, could not help but gun down his own teammates. Cal was forced to fire a bullet into his head, but even that was not enough to free Hunky from the horrors, for his disembodied spirit was seen dragged down into eldritch depths. Only Cal, Desiree, and Breslow survived the ordeal.

There were various oddities about the whole mission. In addition to its last minute nature, orders had been to keep Cal in the dark about it. He only learned of it because Desiree sought his help after the mission turned sour. Furthermore, the Batrachi seemed to know the Blasphemy Boys were coming.

After the mission, Cal went to speak to Seamus Finneran about the strangeness surrounding it all, and to arrange a return mission. He could not help noticing something immensely disquieting about the very presence of his superior, whose voice “crawled in [his] brain like an insect...”

According to the Broken Man, all this is somehow tied to the threat of the Oubor.

|powers =

|Equipment =
In addition to more conventional firearms, the Blasphemy Boy’s arsenal was supplemented by anti-demon weapons of a more esoteric nature.

|speculations =
The name Carruthers has been used for both a member of the Blasphemy Boys and for one member of the cosmic superhero team the Apollo Eleven. A writer re-using a name, or are the two related?

|observations =
While called "boys," the term could be considered a slight misnomer. The woman Desiree, while technically only part of the steno pool, was as close to a full-on member as to make no difference.

In later life, Cal named his children Gregory, James, and Desiree, presumably after his old teammates.

|Timelines =

|footnotes =
Before the issue’s release, the group was referred to as the Blasphemy Agency in some promotional material. In-story, however, the only time they've ever been referred to as such is by the Broken Man in issue #1. Since his grasp on sanity can be loose, it's unclear whether this is an actual alternate name for the group.
|intro =
Three decades ago he was a master criminal terrorizing the seas. He disappeared after an encounter with Mermaid. What happened to him?

|history =

For many years, Mister Manta was the bane of seagoing commerce. He plundered ships for technology and valuables, or sank them in order to salvage what he wanted at his leisure. Few spoke his name without fear, and many respected him for the riches that he could bring them under his command. He was noted as a pioneer in aquatic crime. Eventually, he vanished after a battle with Mermaid, his battle suit's wing-servos and control system ruined and uncontrollable. He was presumed dead until recently.

When the Scandinavian Star was attacked by Skinner Bones and the Plunder Squad, Mister Manta arrived, wearing a suit which was primitive, apparently improvised from plants, but was no less effective - as the Plunder Squad discovered, much to their dismay. He was only recognized because of Mermaid, who arrived with a rescue team of Oceanians. While she was willing to offer him aid in returning to society, since the statutes of limitations on most of his crimes had expired, he fled when she was distracted, for reasons unknown. There are no large islands in the region where he was last seen; it is presumed that he is based on a small island in the region, or possibly an uncharted one.

|powers =
Mister Manta can breathe underwater and has preternatural strength.

|equipment =
* He is a cutting-edge engineer who created his own arsenal of weaponry.
* His original set of wings, used for propelling himself in air and water, were powered and controlled using miniaturized servos.
* The set of wings he was wearing during the Scandinavian Star incident would seem to be constructed from plant materials.
* His timely arrival at the Scandinavian Star makes it likely that he has a radio receiver of some sort.

|observations =

Three decades ago he was a master criminal terrorizing the seas. He disappeared after an encounter with Mermaid. What happened to him?

|history =

For many years, Mister Manta was the bane of seagoing commerce. He plundered ships for technology and values, or sank them in order to salvage what he wanted at his leisure.

When the Scandinavian Star was attacked by Skinner Bones and the Plunder Squad, he arrived, wearing a suit which was primitive, apparently improvised from plants, but was no less effective - as the Plunder Squad discovered, much to their dismay.

* His original set of wings, used for propelling himself in air and water, ares powered and controlled using miniaturized servos.
* The set of wings he was wearing during the Scandinavian Star incident would seem to be constructed from plant materials.
* His timely arrival at the Scandinavian Star makes it likely that he has a radio receiver of some sort.

|observations =

|speculations =
* His new suit should not have been able to withstand the stresses of flight or combat without chemical sealants and strengthening, which suggests that the time between his disappearance and reappearance has in part been spent becoming a self-trained materials scientist and chemist. A strange and mysterious being, the Hanged Man stands a nightly vigil over the neighborhood known as Shadow Hill. He wears a burlap bag over his face and a badly frayed rope around his neck. Shadowy remnants of a ghastly an execution.
|history =
K.O. Carson tells tales of olden times and the Hanged Man. Some of those tales pre-date World War I and the arrival of Air Ace. The earliest stories originate in mystic European folklore from the Middle Ages, but his first appearance was in Picardy, France, in 1748. Stephane Mesnier was found guilty of crimes, and sentenced to death, but at the moment of death, he was offered a chance to serve the world, by giving up his body to a being that needed it in order to act. He accepted this chance, and the Hanged Man was born. Afterwards, The Hanged Man promised his aid to anybody of that family who needed it.

The Hanged Man, along with the migration of large groups of Eastern Europeans, is believed to have settled into the area now known as Astro City in the later half of the 19th Century. There are no specific details, just ghostly fragments of events from an ancient past.

Recent history provides more abundant information, starting with police database files detailing Hanged Man's activities protecting the residents of Astro City. One of his most revered incidents involved the mysterious murders plaguing Shadow Hill during the Great Enelsian Invasion. That case baffled authorities who originally felt that the Confessor, a rather ruthless vigilante, was somehow tied to the killings.

Instead, the Hanged Man discovered the real culprit turned out to be an extremely horrendous and bestial entity. On a very dark night shortly following both the death of the Confessor and the defeat of the Enelsians, an eerie light emanated over the old buildings inhabiting Shadow Hill. It was a projection filling the skies, mingling with the starlight. A vision made large by the Hanged Man so all the restless citizens of Astro City could witness the final life moments of a horrific killer that had caused so much grieving. That was the relief needed and in the end, the Hanged Man brought closure for the victims and the city.

More recently, he directed the Dancing Master to return to a place known as the Old Lands. The two beings recognized each other, and the Dancing Master remembered three of the hundreds of names that the Hanged Man had used before he "wore a sack upon his head," although it is unclear how the two know each other.

That might refer just to the battle that day, or (more likely) an invitation to be an active member of Honor Guard. There is nothing to indicate if she was aware of this event prior to joining Honor Guard, although it seems possible.
Notably, her flight appears to be related to a curse laid on her by the dark god Jabaja - one which may eventually turn her into a bird, although the blessings she received from the other gods appear to be slowing down the transformation.
A strange and mysterious being, the Hanged Man stands a nightly vigil over the neighborhood known as Shadow Hill. He wears a burlap bag over his face and a badly frayed rope around his neck. Shadowy remnants of a ghastly and perhaps unjustified execution.
|history =
K.O. Carson tells tales of olden times and the Hanged Man. Some of those tales pre-date World War I and the arrival of Air Ace. The earliest stories originate in mystic European folklore from the Middle Ages.

A gem formed of the power, hatred, and anger of dead cosmoses.

History
After another defeat by Honor Guard, the subatomic conquerer known as Krigari the Ironhanded turned all his empire's attention to finding a way to defeat them. This eventually led him to the Non, where the Black Opal had formed over countless milennia. The opal granted him great power, including devastating energy blasts and immortality, but when it was destroyed, his soul was destroyed.

There is also a re-creation of the Black Opal, but it was less powerful than the original, and it is not working at last report. It was described as being able to "make my own island paradise just by thinkin' hard," which suggests that it offers reality-altering powers. Last seen in the possession of the Fixit Man, its current location is unknown.
{{character page
|intro = Krigari Ironhand was a tyrant of the Moleculands and enemy of Honor Guard.
|history = Krigari was born in the Unterverse, a microscopic layer of reality smaller than Subatomia or even Quarkadia. In Krigari's homeland, combat was paramount and ubiquitous: every creature was expected to fight or die. As he fought, Krigari learned that the act of battle was a kind of nutrition that sustained and nourished him, making him grow and become stronger and smarter.

Krigari's conquests were so many and so vast that, as he defeated and killed hundreds, thousands, and millions, he grew beyond the worlds of his youth until he razed his way through the Quarkrealms, defeating the RGBs of Dexitor, the Star-Spanning Empire of the CMYK, and the Hrunti Systems, all while expanding the size and power of his armada from among those defeated forces who'd fought the hardest against him.

The Quiqui-A foresaw his arrival from three levels of reality away. Realizing that there was no one in the path between Krigari and themselves, they prepared for their inevitable defeat.

One of the Quiqui-a, Eth, approached Krigari in the guise of Druin the Seer, and told Krigari of omens about Honor Guard, the heroes who--at least, according to Druin--would eventually defeat him.

Krigari decided to test that claim and sought out Honor Guard at numerous occasions, using information provided by Druin to hopefully overcome the heroes. First, he attacked them first in its original headquarters in the Samachson Cliffs near Shadow Hill; later, he attempted to capture each of its members one by one (being foiled by the efforts of Mermaid). At another point, Krigari sought to confine them in the Catacombs of Uta-Long, where Krigari might have been victorius save for the unexpected arrival of Derelikt. On another occasion, Krigari gained control over the United States' nuclear arsenal and nearly obliterated the planet. At every turn, he was thwarted, but still he resolved himself to defeat Honor Guard, until it was his one driving motivation.

Krigari took his forces and, using Q-bombardment, punched a hole in reality into the Non, a kind of resting place for obliterated universes. There, Krigari defeated the Non's undead guardians until he located the Black Opal, a gem that would supposedly make him immortal and unstoppable but was also potentially deadly to the touch.

Krigari's armada invaded Earth, and when Honor Guard broached his command ship to stop him, the hero Stormhawk grabbed the Black Opal. Krigari attempted to kill Stormhawk, but his attack left Stormhawk alive long enough to shatter the Black Opal. The resulting explosion killed both Stormhawk and Krigari.
|history =
While her father, the original Goldenglove was in jail, young Yolanda tinkered with his gloves, discovering new powers beyond those ever displayed by her father. Rescuing them after his death, she embarked upon a career of crime. She almost became another victim of the Kiefer Square Killer before being saved by Steeljack's interventions.

Thanks to Steeljack, her life moved in a very positive direction. She uses the powers given to her by her gloves to break up crime operations and take down small time super-villains. She also works with and for the community, running a youth gym and working to revitalize the Irregulars. She checks in on Steeljack from time to time, sharing stories about kids at-risk, the local crime scene and trying to help people stay straight. In the aftermath of Steeljack's investigation of former villains framed for various crimes, she provided evidence which was instrumental in clearing him of charges of murder.
Hard Times On Kiefer Square
Carl "Carlie" Donewicz was a young boy growing up in the Kiefer Square section of Astro City when he started to run with gangs. You had to in that part of town, or you ended up in a world of hurt. Carl wanted out, and studied as best he could in order to make it happen, but things got complicated. He had minor gang association with the Skullcrushers, and when it came to learning, well, he struggled.

After a fight in which he inadvertently killed a rival gang member, Carl went a little crazy, committing an assortment of violent crimes. In desperation he turned to Dr. Norton Ganss, a scientist who could chemically enhance human physiology, giving people superhuman powers. Somehow, Carl managed to arrange an appointment to discuss potential opportunities. After being told he was acceptable, Carl was immersed in a tank filled with an assortment of liquids. When he emerged, his body chemistry was altered. The most noticeable, his skin was transformed into a metallic material that provided armor protection and made him near invulnerable to harm. He took the name "Steel-Jacketed Man" and Carl entered into the world of the "black masks" (a.k.a. "super villains").

Time For a Team Up
In the early or mid 1960s, he was part of the Terrifying Three with Cutlass and the first Quarrel as team mates. This partnership didn't last long.

The Jail Bird Years
Although he had some moderate solo success as a criminal, Carl ended up in and out of prison, spending over twenty years in the Biro Island Correctional Facility. When he was released in 1998 he vowed to "go straight" and never return. This proved to be difficult due to his well-known reputation and distinctive likeness. Finding work was hard, especially when the system itself had rules that made moving on very difficult.

The Tangled Trail to Redemption
Jack had a rough path and a lot of bad reputation to live down in order to make good on his vows. He bumped into a lot of friends, old and new, that wanted to exploit him for his skills, or take advantage of his situation. No one, believed him, not even Samaritan.

This distrust left him little choice but to turn to an old criminal colleague, Donnelly Ferguson, known to many as the Broker. He could cut deals, and find work for any that weren't afraid to bend the laws, even break them for money. There was a string of "Black Mask" killings going on in and near Kiefer Square. The residents were getting nervous and anxieties ran high. They needed help, but given the neighborhood, and the people involved, the official channels weren't doing much. So they cut a deal, Steeljack needed the work, Kiefer Square needed a hero, and Donnelly could make a profit.

Steeljack followed several twisted paths to find the killer. Some lead nowhere, one was completely wrong, but the investigation dug up a lot of history about Astro City's past, including some juicy gossip about a couple of legendary Honor Guard members. Along the way we met a lot of new characters, some with dreams of finding Wonderland, others wanting out, desperately. Eventually the hideous motivation for the killings was unraveled. A full synopsis of Jack's Hero-quest is detailed in The Conquistador's Plot.

A Jack of All Trades
Cut to nearly twenty years later. Steeljack is pretty much making good on his desire to stay clean. He is still tending the cemetery, but that seems to be one of several side jobs. He also does heavy-lifting work for the city, which includes doing salvage operations on the bottom of the Gaines River. But his major focus, no doubt influenced by his experience solving the Kiefer Square murder mystery, is running a detective agency. His investigation skills are lacking, but he gets bail-jumper work, and other jobs requiring somebody strong and tough. His most dangerous case is on going and it involves Cutlass. She was a romantic interest, but the breakup included cutting open his chest and leaving him for dead or the police, whichever came first. Now he's trying to clear her name. It's a complex relationship.

|powers =
Super strength

Steel skin His DNA has been chemically altered, allowing his skin to incorporate iron into it, converting it to steel in the process. Even by super-being standards, he is highly durable. Like regular human skin, the outer layers of his steel skin decays and dies over time to be replaced by new metallic cells. It does heal when injured, but it is showing sign of rusting as he ages. So far there is no sign of a cellular return to a more normal human-like composition, but to maintain his health, he is taking iron supplements.

Supernatural creatures which are negatively affected by cold iron can be harmed by Steeljack's punches.

The metal in his skin makes using touchscreen interfaces difficult or impossible.

|observations =
* The basis for Steeljack's physical appearance is heavily influenced by the physical appearance and emotional attitudes of actor Robert Mitchum. Mitchum played several film noir characters that shared many of the traits that make up the personality and basic character chemistry of Carl Donewicz, the Steel Jacked Man.
* His weight is based on a comment made to Ismiri. He claims to have weighed more earlier in his career..
|intro =The Living Nightmare was inadvertently created by a psychologist who attempted to eliminate fear but instead externalized the emotion into a violent and destructive physical manifestation of humanity's darkest fears. The Living Nightmare has taken many forms over the years, even becoming a force for good on occasion.

|history =
Save for its laboratory origin, very little is known about the history of the Living Nightmare. In the mid-to-late 1960s, and again during the 1970s, the monster was mentally controlled by a courageous Marine pilot. Under the pilot’s influences, the Living Nightmare became a hero and member of Honor Guard.

Over the past few decades however, the Living Nightmare had become a nearly mindless, primal monster, inexplicably drawn to the super-powered beings who had contained it countless times in the past. The encounter with Samaritan in 1995 is a typical example. It was soundly defeated then, but it was not, and never seems to be permanent.

The Living Nightmare’s appearance has changed over time, determined it would seem, by the good-versus-evil influences of the particular incarnation. Its most familiar and consistent visage is that of a dark, hulking figure, with multiple tentacles protruding from its skull, at least two sets of glowing red eyes, and a giant fang-filled mouth in its chest.

|powers =
As the physical manifestation of fear, the Living Nightmare has a host of powers, many of which are still poorly understood.

Superhuman Strength: The Living Nightmare is incredibly strong. Although the upper limits of its strength are unknown, it has been observed trading blows with the extremely powerful Samaritan and shrugging off Samaritan's Empyrean Web, which is capable of containing a tidal wave.

Energy Drain: The Living Nightmare can leech energy from its opponents, causing them to grow weaker as they fight the monster. Any and all physical contact with the creature causes drainage.

Nigh Invulnerable with Superhuman Durability: The Living Nightmare’s energy draining powers seem to protect it from many forms of attack, making it nigh-invulnerable. It can also survive in the vacuum of space.

Uncanny Senses: As of 1995, the Living Nightmare was inexplicably drawn to its super-powered enemies.

Teleportation: The Living Nightmare appears out of nowhere, making its attack all the more fearful. It then “blinks out of existence” when too far away from its power source, fear.

Shapeshifting: The Living Nightmare can change the shape of its body; this allows it to form wings which are capable of supporting it in sustained flight.

Empathic Assault: The Living Nightmare can absorb fear, amplify it, and project the result back. This appears to leave the target in a catatonic state, although it could potentially kill somebody by triggering cardiac arrest.

Weaknesses

The Living Nightmare is powered by raw fear and can be defeated if isolated from these emotions (by sending it into space, for example). In addition, the tentacles on its head are said to be fear-receptors, and the creature has occasionally been defeated by blocking or modifying its access to the fear around it.

Psychological Profile

In most incarnations, the Living Nightmare has been a mindless creature who relentlessly attacks its enemies until on the verge of defeat or separated from a source of fear. It seems consumed by rage, blindly lashing out at its enemies. Fortunately, this also meant it was a rather stupid and predictable creature that could be maneuvered into tactically compromising situations during combat. During this time, it displayed no ability to communicate beyond growls, roars, and other incoherent noises.

However, when it reconstituted itself and escaped confinement on Kirby Mountain, it apparently had reached a point in its evolution where it became sentient. It learned to override the Domina-Rays which were being used to control it by observing members of Honor Guard conquering their fears, and spoke its first words before leaving the fight to hunt down and defeat Doctor Dominax. Currently, it speaks in short sentences, with somewhat choppy grammar, but it is capable of communicating deep concepts and speaking in metaphor, which implies that its intellect is greater than its speech would suggest.

|equipment =

|observations =

|speculations =
* Samaritan observes that the Living Nightmare always seems to attack him when he is tired and theorizes this might "be a function of its current incarnation..." Whether the creature actually has the uncanny ability to sense when one of its prey is tired or weak, is suspect but not confirmed.

* During at least one of its heroic manifestation phases, it seemed to be encased in a suit of armor built in a similar likeness of its evil incarnations as the Living Nightmare.

* Since it draws its power from human fear, the upper limit of its powers is unknown; hypothetically, in a sufficiently stressful situation such as an alien invasion, the fears of the world's population could render it unstoppable.
--- Kurt Busiek (interview with Mtv's Geek-News)

|history =
Crazy or insane? Neither or both?

There are hints of a past life, a possibly known identity for the Broken Man. However, pretty much everything here is speculative in nature. The Broken Man is in charge of the narrative, we are mere observers. The Broken Man warns that he is on a mission to save something (us, the world, mankind, the universe, we are not sure at this point) from the perceived threats of an entity know as the Oubor. He somehow broke the fourth wall itself to recruit readers' aid in his efforts. With our help, he was able to nudge Ben Pullam into becoming a guide to an Alien Ambassador named Telseth. ("Through Open Doors (Part One)")

Some time later, he took the time to chat with us about the mission, but we got too distracted checking out the various knick-knacks in his collection. When viewing certain objects, past history started to reveal itself: Images and activities, presented in some kind of dream-like manner. To keep us from seeing events he deemed too risky, he showed us, as a sop, a coin bearing Dame Progress's image and its tale of the heroine's run-in with Mister Cakewalk circa 1900. ("Thumbtacks & Yarn")

And when Thatcher Jerome stole five containers of the alien chemical sorna from the Ambassador and was contemplating the wisest way to use them, the Broken Man was watching from a distance... ("Through Open Doors (Part Two)")

Yet while all this is going down, he's simultaneously stuck in a psychiatric facility, spending his days in a pharmaceutical haze. Somehow.

Who knows for sure? We might be listening to the rantings of a crazed fool, or the last sane warnings of a man driven to his mental limits by the awareness of a sinister and very real threat. So, for all of us, keeping a low profile might indeed be a good idea. At least until we know more about both the Oubor and the skinny man with the purple skin.

|powers =

He has broken the fourth wall. He can communicate with the reader.
|observations =
* He wears a white smock over a t-shirt depicting the famous Astro City Signal Rocket. The shirt is very popular with the tourists.
* Kurt Busiek has commented that as the series of Astro City stories have so far circled around the Silver Agent as the overall background character, the next (current) cycle will belong to the Broken Man. Interesting... very interesting.

|speculations =
We know that in the world of physical reality, the Broken Man's skin is yellow. Just like the Bouncing Beatnik and the Halcyon Hippie, and possibly Mister Cakewalk too, though in his case it might just be clothes. Plus, all three of these men embodied cultural movements of their time. The Broken Man says he was once eternally young. So, even though they span different eras, could all four men be different versions of the same being?

We can speculate even further on the narrative powers of the Broken Man. The objects that he hangs from yarn and thumb-tacks are important elements to his dramatic concerns about the threat of the Oubor. They all purportedly have stories behind them. Yet to trigger their visual narrative requires a mechanism that is still mysterious and currently unexplainable. It's not time activated, we as viewers expended two panels of comic book page real estate focused on a magazine featuring the Iron Horse. Despite our intense and curious interests, nothing happened. Close proximity to a 45 RPM (revolutions per minute) vinyl record failed to elicit a day dream narration, even though the musical group had the intriguing name of The Kloo a play on the sound of the word 'clue.'
-- Ben Colstone, the Wolfspider.

|history =
A size-shifting superhero out of Australia, Wolfspider is one of Honor Guard's newest recruits. Bitten by a rare, exotic, and unfortunately deadly spider, the young Ben Colstone is injected with experimental drugs to save his life. More misfortune strikes when unusual side-effects cause Ben to shrink in size. With the help of his mother, a brilliant scientist specializing in adapting organic entomological systems into modern technologies, he gained four additional appendages and learned how to control them. They were artificial, but the control was done via his venom altered brain and nervous system.

Wolfspider appeared with his teammates for a charity function in Australia. The money was for a new wing of a hospital. ("Welcome to HumanoGlobal")

Alongside the rest of Honor Guard, he laid siege to the Skullcrushers' hidden base in Ecuador. He and Quarrel II helped the Assemblyman II try to disrupt and penetrate the villains' shields. ("Mistakes")

|powers =
He has the ability to shrink down in size to the smallest fraction of a normal adult's, not even half a foot in height.

|equipment =
His flying vehicle serves as both his mode of transportation and as his primary weapons system. It projects "venom-bursts" that can serve a variety of functions, including stunning enemies and melting steel. While they seem a mechanical extension of the vehicle, the venom bursts are controlled and emanate directly from Wolfspider himself. Something he doesn't like being known to others.

|observations = Wolfspider is a long-time fan of the fictional superhero team Queenslaw; his apartment in San Francisco has several Queenslaw action figures on a shelf, and a Ute is sitting on the coffee table.
|intro = A talking gorilla that wants nothing more than to play drums, but finds the path to success laden with all manner of super-related dangers.
|history =
Sticks is a talking silverback gorilla (Gorilla gorilla), from the hidden civilization of Gorilla Mountain in Antarctica near the Dufek Masif. When he was young, Sticks fell in love with human music, building his own rudimentary drum kits in order to create and play the music he was so passionate about. Unfortunately, he was regularly caught with the drums and punished for it.

Like all citizens of Gorilla Mountain, Sticks was a member of its Defense Force and engaged in military actions against the Mountain's enemies, most frequently and significantly the denizens of Dinosaur Mountain, inhabitants of the area in an alternate dimension. Eventually, Gorilla Mountain's forces overwhelmed invaders from Dinosaur Mountain, brutally slaughtering them all in a surprise attack. Memories of that engagement haunted Sticks for a considerable time.

Growing weary of Gorilla Mountain and its oppression of his musical interests, Sticks decided to leave and join the world beyond his home. During one assignment in Gorilla Mountain's Sky Patrol forces, Sticks rigged his airskiff to "malfunction," using that ruse to escape into the clouds and beyond the reach of his people. Eventually, he made his way to Astro City, where he hoped to make a name for himself as a musician. But his adjustment to life in Astro City would be very much as Robert Frost would say, "an artist's quarrel with the world."

Stick's initial audition as a drummer in Astro City was interrupted by the crash landing of an Ionix robo-drone into a nearby apartment building, which set the building on fire. While the First Family was fighting other drones in the area, Sticks leapt his way into the building, where he assisted in the evacuation of several residents who had been trapped in the fire.

Following that rescue effort, Sticks was perceived as a potential new hero in the city (with at least one reporter asking whether he was a shape-changer with a "real," implicitly human, form). The music auditions, meanwhile, had been cancelled. However, several other up-and-coming musicians brought him to their space, where they quickly became friends and started a band together.

Unfortunately, Sticks was quickly visited by the superhero team Reflex 6, whose members wanted to recruit him to their cause. When he turned down the offer, they provided Sticks with a contact card if he changed his mind.

At a subsequent audition, Sticks was kidnapped by Scavenger-One and members of the Recovery Squad, who wanted to sell the gorilla as a slave laborer or minion to one of several possible clients, including the Contrabandit and the Talent Agency. Thanks to his training in the Gorilla Mountain Defense Force, Sticks was able to overcome his captors, alert Astro City authories, and escape.

For a brief time, Sticks decided to run with Reflex 6 in defense and protection of his newly adopted home. However, thoughts of his earlier involvement in Gorilla Mountain's Defense Force--and the violence, and dedication to that violence, needed for victory--led Sticks to quit the team and try once more to make a living as a musician with his human friends.

Just as before, Sticks found it impossible to avoid entirely the threats facing a talking gorilla in a world of humans, and most of his bandmates noted their unease at the inevitability of super-powered dangers so long as they associated with Sticks. Unsure of what he should do, Sticks was visited briefly by Samaritan, who sought to help the gorilla pursue his dreams, whatever they were.

Sticks, in the superhero guise of "Tuxedo Gorilla" (dressed in a gorilla-sized tuxedo and top hat and wielding a cane), Sticks announced to various news media that he was forming a band of musically inclined individuals with super powers and abilities. Reflex 6 and Honor Guard were on hand to provide security for those auditioning, lest they experience the same frustrating obstacles that Sticks had initially faced.

Eventually, Sticks found his bandmates and, together, they formed the act Powerchord!

|powers =

|equipment =
As a member of Gorilla Mountain's Defense Force and Sky Patrol, Sticks used a jet-powered, hang glider-like airskiff and had a suit of armor. For weapons, he had access to energy blades and blaster weaponry (introduced to the society by Augustus Furst and Julius Furst.
As Tuxedo Gorilla, he wore a bulletproof tuxedo and shock-absorbing spats. His cane had a sensor array built into it, and his hat was equipped with independent-hover gyro-stabilizers programmed to return it to his head.

|observations = Due to his training as a member of Gorilla Mountain's defense forces, Sticks has an impressive set of skills; he is capable of using an unfamiliar firearm with only a brief examination, programming a ship's autopilot, and identifying and activating a full-spectrum radio beacon. He does not freeze in dangerous situations, and responds quickly and effectively to emergencies.
|speculations = Sticks may also be trained in tactics (both ground-based and aerial) and basic first aid for a resident of Gorilla Mountain. If he does have first aid training, it is unclear how much of it would be useful on the average resident of Astro City.
Crazy or insane? Neither or both?

|history =
There are hints of a past life, a possibly known identity for the Broken Man. However, currently there is not enough information available to even bother engaging in casual speculation. The Broken Man says that he is on a mission to save something (us, the world, mankind, the universe, we are not sure at this point) from the perceived threats of an entity know as the Oubor. On the other hand, he also claims that he "used to be eternally (young)."

Who knows for sure. We might be listening to the rantings of a very crazed fool, or the last sane warnings of a man driven to his mental limits by the awareness of a sinister and very real threat. So, for all of us, keeping a low profile might indeed be a good idea. At least until we know more about both the Oubor and the skinny man with the purple skin.
