Ironhorse, the Human Locomotive, a hero of the past. His adventures are the stuff of legend.

|history =
His earliest missions were focused on protecting the railroads and the Chinese laborers. The former from bandits and the latter from the railroad labor bosses.

Today he can still be spotted in and around Astro City. Usually at a bit more relaxing environment like perhaps Bruiser's bar, arm-wrestling with Rex Zorus of the First Family. Wait a minute, did I say relaxing?

|powers =
His strength levels are on par with upper echelon powerhouses like Rex Zorus, Cleopatra and the Living Nightmare.
The Broken Man's Wall is a patchwork of clues, histories, characters of interest, and other hodge-podge relating to the Oubor mystery. For instance, in Astro City #5, Ironhorse is featured on the cover of a Wonder Science Western magazine. The precise reason for it being there is unknown. Chances are high that it might relate to the tale the Broken Man tells of Ironhorse teaming with Mister Cakewalk to protect railroad workers from strike-breakers.
{{character page
|intro =
A dark and moody hero, Nightingale is rarely seen alone, either partnered in her early years with Sunshrike, and then later, with her new teammate, Sunbird.
|history =

Her dual partnerships are unique. She was the younger sidekick to Sunshrike, but seems to be the strong mentor and motherly companion to Sunbird.

In the early 1980s, a cat was also a part of their entourage, seen many times roaming the streets with them. Something not atypical of the species, but according to creator Kurt Busiek, the feline doesn't seem to be much of a team player.

|powers =
In addition to being a skilled acrobat and martial artist, Nightingale can project a mist-like field of darkness, describing it as "shadow powers".
|observations =

|speculations =
* It's speculated wildly that Nightingale and Sunbird are lesbians, but they neither confirm nor deny the allegations. It has also been speculated that they might be sisters, or perhaps a mother and daughter team of crime-fighters.
* According to Sunshrike, there are only the two of them at any one time, the "bird of light" and the "bird of shadow". This suggests they're legacy characters, with new women taking the roles every so often. Nightingale is the younger in the 80s with Sunshrike, and the elder in the 90s with Sunbird. There is also speculation a familial connection might be in play with who takes up the legacies.
* Sunshrike also thinks it wouldn't be allowed for them to have a cat as part of the team, hinting that some external agency may be involved with selecting the pair.
* There seems to be an informal camaraderie among these street fighting superheroes. A common core of them associate with each other on many occasions. Crackerjack, Jack-in-the-Box, Quarrel, Sunbird, and Nightingale cross paths often. Depending on the time-range, you might also include Street Angel in the mix, along with the Irregulars.
* A cat and a couple of birds don't seem to be the most compatible of partnerships, and shrikes, despite their small size, are known to be carnivorous.
<br>-- Roy Virgil

|history =
The Astro-Naut witnessed them destroying a whole star system. Four worlds, two moons. He engaged them in battle. It is unclear if he was successful, or if the devastation was so vast, that even in victory, it seemed like a great loss.

He encountered them near Procyon, a star system, about 11.5 light years from earth. Their actual place of origin is unknown. Their total population not revealed. From what he learned of their history, they had barely managed to civilize themselves when they were visited by interstellar explorers. They murdered them and took their technology, using it to take to the stars themselves, making war on everyone they encountered.

Eventually they found their way to Romeyn Falls and Earth. On a late Spring night in 1946 numerous Merivani vessels blackened the skies. The world was still recovering from the aftermath of World War II. But despite that battle weariness, it wouldn't have made any difference. Earth wasn't ready for alien invasions in that time frame. They didn't have the technology, or so everyone thought until, like the cavalry in a Western Epic, the Astro-Naut returned from his self-imposed seclusion. Accompanied by a fleet of futuristic drones that he had spent years producing he once again engaged the evil foes. He made it very clear to the warring Merivani, "Not this planet. Not this city."

The outcome was a complete eradication of the entire invading Merivani, their fleet, even the mother ship. Nothing survived the great explosion in the sky. Nothing for government agents to scavenge or try to replicate for their possibly evil goals.

There is no indication of additional Mervani out in space somewhere, still plundering other alien civilizations. Then too, there is also nothing that says there aren't more out there... waiting, wondering what happened to their warrior brethren who went missing on what was thought to be a minor mission to Earth. Preparing perhaps for a return visit in our not too distant futures.
PAGENAME was a protected sanctuary and laboratory. A place for intense, focused scientific development, and equally important, maximum privacy from interlopers, especially those suffering from narrow minded government greed.

There is technologies of all sorts, developed by Roy Vigil a visionary way ahead of his times. A transporter is used for "beaming" to and from the Earth's surface. Airships built here that can travel great distances, some that can bend space to venture to distant star systems without bumping into the problems associated with mere light-speed mechanics, or the pesky limitations of Theoretical Relativity. There's an atmo-gravitic field to maintain an atmosphere, generate heat, and perhaps is the domed device you see pictured, providing low level shielding against meteors and other small cosmic debris pulled in by earth's gravitational forces.

Speculation
* It appears to be an asteroid of fairly significant size. It should be visible from earth, unless some other technology is hiding it from view.

* No doubt it was traveling in a long transit period out past the gas giant planets, until it was captured and forced to stay near earth. If placed in a stable orbit(and it probably was knowing who we are talking about), it is likely still up there. The big question to ponder, is he?
"Are you talking about Flash Gordon stuff, Mr. Virgil? Rocket ships and space pilots, rocket jockeys?"

The word you are looking for, friends, is "Astronaut."

|history =
Wearing pilot goggles, leather jacket, and a long red scarf, PAGENAME made no pretense for a secret identity. He was testing rocket ship engines in flights over the city. Everyone knew him by his name, Roy Virgil. They also knew he was a bit eccentric, very wealthy, a visionary. His passion for traveling to space gave him the nickname, PAGENAME. That become his calling card.

During the Great Depression, organized crime families in Romeyn Falls dug themselves in, diversifying their operations. In 1936, the Ingels Street mob tried muscling in on Roy's work, demanding protection money, and he refused. They sent round the Convincer, a one-man wrecking crew, to convince him, but Roy took care of him, dropping him off with the police to tell them about his bosses.

Councilman Joseph Greenwald visited Virgil Air Systems afterwards to see if Roy was interested in taking up crime-fighting, if perhaps the city could support him. Joe helped Roy with his business, permits, and such, and in return Roy helped him campaign. Perhaps it was Joe who got Roy into costume, perhaps not, but he started showing up in a stylized astronaut outfit.

As Roy made good on his arrangement with the city, taking down criminals, his reputation grew - there were newsreels, magazines and toys, and they even started making a movie about him.

His development of the Ethero-Drive, which allowed him to slip through folds of empty space, was a big breakthrough for him, allowing him to venture out into the universe, where he fought villains, had adventures, and encountered alien civilizations. Inspired by the technologies he saw out there, when he came back to Earth he'd work on inventions that would do the same thing, or do entirely new things born of new knowledge.

Along the way, he met Xalzana, the one woman he might have left Earth behind for, but though they met numerous times, and something he thought was love developed, there was a fear in her, not of him, but of something she wouldn't say. On the night he intended to propose to her, there was an attack, separating them, and though he searched more than a dozen worlds for her afterwards, he never saw her again.

Around 1942, Roy came across a star system under attack from the Mrevani, a ruthless race bent on conquest. He discovered that when the Mrevani had first been visited by interstellar explorers, they'd killed them and taken their technology, turning their warlike ways out towards the universe at large, attacking everyone they met. They'd got the technology before they were ready to handle it, and Roy feared that if he gave humanity that technology, then they'd end up going down a similar route. Shaken, he withdrew from human society, becoming a recluse; when the American goverment came round, looking to use his inventions in the war, he refused.

The refusal shook people's faith in him. Though he still did his own part for the war effort, at one point getting captured by the enemy and escaping, the American public preferred to forget about him, turning to heroes who were more clear-cut, heroes they could be certain of, and he disappeared from view.

In late spring of 1946, the Mrevani came to Earth, laying waste to Romeyn Falls. The Astro-Naut returned to stop them, a fleet of drone ships with him to defend his home city. Deftly avoiding the Mrevani's attacks, he piloted his ship into their flying base and blew it up, but took serious injuries in the process. He used a teleporter to return to his base in Romeyn Falls, the Gernsback Building, and with Joe's assistance destroyed his remaining work in order to avoid anyone else using them. Once that was done, he used the teleporter once again, but where he went, whether he lived or died, what ultimately became of him, no-one on Earth knows.

The town renamed itself in honor of his bravery, becoming Astro City in 1947. The rocket beacon on Tower was reconfigured, becoming a warning signal, alerting heroes of impending danger.

|equipment =
* Astro-naut's Orbital Airstrip harbors spacecrafts, special weapons, advanced technical gear, amazing manufacturing tools, and who knows what other equipment for traveling to outer space, distant planets, and perhaps even time itself.

|observations = Roy had a once-in-a-lifetime mind, coming up with inventions far in advance of Earth technology at the time. As Joe put it, Roy made breakthroughs practically by force of will, simply by knowing they were possible. He doesn't seem to have realized he was anything exceptional, assuming anyone could do it if they put their mind to it.

|speculations =
* Joe notes he only knew some of Roy's secrets, perhaps less than a half. Roy was probably the only one who knew everything.
* It's not mentioned why the Mrevani targeted Romeyn Falls - perhaps in retaliation for Roy's earlier fight with them?
|intro =
A strange and mysterious being, the Hanged Man stands a nightly vigil over the neighborhood known as Shadow Hill. He wears a burlap bag over his face and a badly frayed rope around his neck. The shadowy remnants of a ghastly execution.

|history =
K.O. Carson tells tales of olden times and the Hanged Man, some of which pre-date World War I and the arrival of Air Ace. The earliest stories originate in mystic European folklore from the Middle Ages, but his first recorded appearance was in Picardy, France, in 1748, where he seems already to have been known. Stephane Mesnier was found guilty of unspecified crimes, and sentenced to hang, but at the moment of death, he was offered a chance to serve the world by gifting his body as a vessel that the Hanged Man could inhabit in order to stop a great danger, and accepted.

In the later half of the 19th Century, the Hanged Man, along with large groups of Eastern Europeans, migrated to the American West into the area now known as Astro City. No specific details are known, just ghostly fragments of events from an ancient past.

Recent history provides more abundant information, starting with police database files detailing Hanged Man's activities protecting the residents of Astro City. One of his most revered incidents involved the mysterious murders plaguing Shadow Hill during the time of the Great Enelsian Invasion. That case baffled authorities who originally felt that the Confessor, a rather ruthless vigilante, was somehow responsible for the killings.

Instead, the Hanged Man discovered the real culprit turned out to be an extremely horrendous and bestial entity. On a very dark night shortly following both the death of the Confessor and the defeat of the Enelsians, an eerie light emanated over the old buildings inhabiting Shadow Hill. It was a projection filling the skies, mingling with the starlight. A vision made large by the Hanged Man so all the restless citizens of Astro City could witness the final life moments of a horrific killer that had caused so much grieving. That was the relief needed and in the end, the Hanged Man brought closure for the victims and the city.

More recently, he directed the Dancing Master to return to a place known as the Old Lands. The two beings recognized each other, and the Dancing Master remembered three of the hundreds of names that the Hanged Man had used before he "wore a sack upon his head." It is unclear how the two know each other.

|powers =
* The Hanged Man's vast powers seem to be supernatural. He is known to fly, although it is more a wispy floating, like that of an apparition.
* He can manipulate his size to tower above buildings.
* He possesses mysterious awareness of alternate time-lines.
* He can grant visions of other times and places with a touch.
* He uses the bodies of the newly-dead as vessels to operate in the realms of the physical world.
* Those he interacts with understand what he means without any need for speech on his part. He can allow his hosts to talk independently of him.

|equipment =
|observations =
* If someone provides the Hanged Man with a service of some kind, he will return the favor by allowing them to call on him in times of great need. This obligation carries forth from generation to generation, as long as there is a need.
* He isn't omnipotent, and sometimes seek assistance to fulfill a request.
* So far, the Hanged Man's hosts have been volunteers. He's conveyed dark implications over what might happen if they weren't.

|speculations =
* The possibilities seem strong that the Hanged Man and his fate are somehow tied into the history, rituals, and superstitions that cling to Shadow Hill.

|history =
There is a definite sense of a long history associated with the Bouncing Beatnik, but to date, he has made very few on-panel appearances within the pages of Astro City comics. At least in this form, with this identity.

According to a Pyramid computer file, he took down a Pyramid base in Los Angeles in the mid 1960s.
|observations =
* On Bruiser's, the (now discontinued) Comics Forum dedicated to all things Astro City, Kurt mentioned, "There will eventually be more of the Beatnik -- or another of his incarnations. He has shown up in two forms, so far."
* Astro City: A Visitor's Guide notes he's never been an Honor Guard member in any incarnation. He's teamed up with them, but never joined.
* He has a yellowish/golden skin color, and only three digits on each hand, indicating he's not completely human.
* The Broken Man confirms the Beatnik is part of the legacy that began with Mister Cakewalk, i.e. an incarnation of living music that manifests as part of an era's counterculture.
* People don't seem to like him for some reason. According to the Broken Man, this is key to something.

|speculations =

* In 1959, the Bouncing Beatnik teamed up with Max O'Million's freshly formed super-hero team, Honor Guard to turn back a dimensional invasion by Shirak the Devourer. It seemed a rather odd collaboration however, given the cultural differences and fighting styles between the Beatnik and Honor Guard, especially with Max O'Million. Follow up commentary about the battle from reporters who frequented a local pub appropriately called the Deadline, strongly reinforced this notion.
* The Halcyon Hippie as depicted in the early 1970s might be a subsequent presentation of what was the Bouncing Beatnik. Fan commentary and letters page response to his first appearance (KBAC2 #1/2) hint that he might be an alternate reality's version of the Beatnik. A repeat appearance in DA1 #4 strongly infers that the Halcyon Hippie is of this dimension as well.
* Based on certain physical similarities, it is possible that in addition to being the Halcyon Hippie, he could also have another identity as the Broken Man.
* On Bruiser's, the (now discontinued) Comics Forum dedicated to all things Astro City, Kurt mentioned, "There will eventually be more of the Beatnik -- or another of his incarnations. He has shown up in two forms, so far."

{{Character page

|intro= He burst onto the Astro City super-hero scene in the 1950s and was an immediate, popular sensation, garnering admiration and respect for his heroic activities.
The Silver Agent symbolized the new era of the sixties, "the best and the brightest."

|history=The Silver Agent was born in 1932, and died in 1973. There is a great shame associated with his ultimate sacrifice, as attested to on his statue. He is a symbol of all that is good in man, while his death is a reminder of a weakness in human nature. Emotional judgement overcame rational thinking. It was a time that very much enabled a mob mentality to ridicule, bring down, even destroy heroic figures.

Origin
Alan Craig was struck by polio in infancy, leaving him with a badly diseased leg. This deformity seemed as if it would leave him crippled for the rest of his life. This greatly disappointed Alan. His family had a strong tradition of pursuing careers that served the public good, and usually such careers were in physically demanding fields such as fire-fighters, police officers and the like. Alan greatly admired his elders and dreamed of following in their footsteps. In the end he became a mail carrier, the best job his physical condition allowed.

While on the job he stumbled onto a ballot-stuffing scheme by members of organized crime. When they gave chase, he tried to lose them in a nearby park, an environment he was thoroughly familiar with. In his flight, he stumbled upon a cave he'd never seen before. This was near the original Romeyn Falls (Waterfalls). Inside he found a bizarre construct of glowing silver, something alien to his every frame of reference. When he touched it, his body was transformed: his disability vanished, he became stronger and faster, and his senses increased. Using his new athleticism, he became the Silver Agent, finally able to serve the community the way he longed to all his growing years.

The Eternal Shame
In 1972, the Silver Agent was framed for the (seeming) murder of the Mad Maharajah.

Following his conviction and shortly before his execution, he was teleported into the 43rd century by the Silver Centurions, an organization from that era. Future Earth and the other Hundred Worlds were at war with the iGod. The Silver Centurions retrieved the Silver Agent, the legend who inspired them, for help. For three long years he fought alongside them to an eventual victory.

After the fighting concluded, Alan chose to return back to his own time, to avoid the risk of altering the timeline for the worse. His journey back took the form of a series of time jumps, each one sending him further into the past, closer to the day he would be executed. Each one skipping less time than the last. Many of these time-stops were far from safe. There were future eras where he fought against the danger of some potent threat. There were eras where civilization had fallen and he aided in its rekindling. Throughout his eventful journey, the Silver Agent kept a detailed journal, in the hopes that his notes might someday help humanity against the various dangers he encountered.

As he traveled ever further back, the process was causing his body to accumulate an undefinable kind of energy, imbuing him with more and more power.

On a day approximately thirty years in the future of his initial teleportation, he was visited by his nephew, Tommy. A young boy when he'd last seen him, Tommy was now a U.S. Senator and older than Alan. He knew where and when to find his uncle, because Alan himself had told Tommy during another stop in the timeline. A stop that was in Tommy's and the world's past, but Alan Craig's subjective future.

After that, the Silver Agent visited four more crisis points in Astro City's timeline:

* His Final Crisis Point(1984)
* The Rise of Kerresh the Devastator(1982)
* The period when the vigilante hero the Black Velvet was out-of-control and flooding the city with powerful energy forces during the Gang Wars(1977),
* Finally, and most critically, Madame Majestrix's Invasion(Spring of 1973).

In each, he was of immense aid against whatever forces were imperilling his city. By the last one (but first from the universe's point of view), his store of accrued energy from his travels was so vast that he had tremendous super-abilities at his disposal.

Making use of the flight ability he now possessed, he hid his journals in a support beam beneath the Calkins Bridge. The journals were designed by Ømnix of the 43rd century Silver Centurions. It wasn't a collection of books, their appearance instead that of a glowing blue cylinder. It would convert itself into a format readable to future generations when the need arose.

Next, he visited his nephew Tommy, at a earlier time and a younger age. This stop occurred on the day of, but after the Agent's execution. He told Tommy of the journals location so that they could be retrieved sometime in the future.

Finally, he made his final step across time, arriving in the prison from whence it all began, mere seconds after he'd vanished. To an outside observer, it would almost have been as if nothing had happened, except of course the replacement of his prison garb by his battle-torn costume made it clear something had.

He was executed by the state in the Spring of 1973.

In the Silver Agent's last life moments, he released all the strange energy he'd collected, sending that accumulated store across the city, suffusing the land with it, marrying the rivers to it, even extending it beyond four dimensional constraints into the past and future. It became the very silvery artifact that made him the Silver Agent, and whose energy touches what is, or one day would be, Astro City.

|powers=

|equipment=
Uniform and Weaponry
*Carries a small pistol that fires various kinds of trick bullets, including ones that act much like smoke bombs upon impact.
*Upper part of body is covered in chain mail, with shield shaped armour over the chest and upper back.
*Same metallic material is used for arm gauntlets. Note: they do not cover the hands.
*Helmet is also metallic and is a half-style, with Germanic knight design influences.
*Wears chain mall leggings and cavalier boots.

|speculations =
* Despite the brief appearance, the motivations, personality and character make-up of the Silver Agent are strongly suggested in his first published appearance in KBAC1 #2. He seemed to have a significant amount of peer admiration, which gave him leadership skills and the ability to motivate others and call upon them for help when needed. He was also very good at making tactical decisions in battle situations.

* Insight suggested early on, and was confirmed in later appearances, that a personality like the Silver Agent would not have had much of a personal life. He was dedicated to his work, passionate about doing the best possible work he could. Accommodating personal time and family responsibilities would have proven difficult. Not all people are wise enough to know this limitation, but the Silver Agent seemed disciplined enough to understand the sacrifices of his choices.

*His abilities gained when traveling through time are similar to the transformation of the Samaritan, when he journeyed from the far future back in time to the present.

|timelines=
* More insights are provided in the Silver Agent's Adventures in Time.
* Silver Agent Cases and Adventures
|footnotes=
<b>Some Interesting Comic History Related Alignments of the Silver Agent:</b>

His debut appearance in a 1959 flashback, references the Silver Agent first appearing just a few years earlier, coinciding with Showcase Comics #4, the generally agreed upon beginning of the Silver Age.

His death in 1973 symbolically aligns with the Death of Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man comics, considered by many Silver-Age fans as the last major event occurring within the overall framework of the Silver-Age Marvel Comics material.

Named for comic book fan, comic historian, and Comic Buyer's Guide writer, Craig Shutt (Mr. Silver Age).
